Cover letters... The secret to getting your resume viewed!

Once you have identified a job for which you want to apply, you must write a cover letter to accompany your resume.  Your cover letter is less formal than your resume and allows you to discuss your skills and experience in a way that will entice the employer to read your resume.

Always:

1.        Prepare your cover letter in the same paper and fonts that you used for your resume

2.       Include the business address, the return address, address, and salutation

3.       Use a standard block format for the letter style

Kinds of Cover letters and formats

There are a few different kinds of Cover letter formats.

The invited letter is one in which the employer has asked for a resume.  Another type of letter is for an employer to whom you were referred. In this style, much like the invited letter style, it is important to showcase your skills and abilities as they relate to the kind of job you have been referred.

The uninvited or cold contact letter is to contact employers who have not advertised or published job openings.

The last style is the job match style. This format lists the skills and abilities that you have as they relate to an opening, rather than using a paragraph style of letter in the body of the cover letter.
